Today I have chosen to talk about Medical insurance. I have a sister who was no so long ago, told that she had cancer. She didn’t have insurance at the time or this was a HUGE concern for her. She is raising 4 children and trying to deal with all that comes with this very sad news. The government does have medical insurance available, but it is a long and tedious process to try and get accepted. The government only provides for children under the age of 18. The only time they will cover an adult is if the adult is pregnant. They do however; have certain circumstances where one can be approved if it is a medical necessity. Now, trying to prove that is where the real troubles come in. Meanwhile she had to pay for all her tests and doctor visits out of her own pocket. After a VERY LONG process, she finally got approved to have her surgery done to remove the cancer. She had to have a partial hysterectomy. As soon as that was all taken care of, the government dropped the insurance.
This is where the story gets very interesting. The surgeon who did the operation made a small error and nicked her bladder. Now, here she is with a bladder that is not working properly due to a surgery that was covered by the insurance. Yet the insurance won’t pick her back up to take care of this new problem. So here she is trying to pay yet more medical bills to get this problem corrected. She still to this day, she has to continue to catherize herself just to keep her bladder from getting full and causing serious pain. She can’t hold urine in her bladder for to long because if she does then she won’t be able to go at all. She can’t take long drives due to this. This is a real inconvenience for her and her family.
I feel that the government should have covered all the follow issues from the surgery. After all, it was the surgery that caused her problems. It is so hard to find insurance that is affordable for large families. So when something of this nature comes up, the government should help out more. Not to mention that when you do have the money to pay for the minimal insurance, they do a credit check and end up charging you more money. It’s a never-ending cycle! The low-income families are just stuck in the middle. Either we have to deal with out or try to come u with more money to pay for these types of medical necessities. That’s just a shame!
